Andrea Podhorsky, PhD

About

I am a tenured Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University. I earned my Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University in 2008 under the supervision of Gene Grossman.

My research advances environmental economics, international trade, and fintech, addressing critical issues at the nexus of sustainability, global markets, and financial innovation. Initially, I focused on the efficacy and design of certification programs addressing environmental and social externalities. After completing a Master of Science in Computational Finance at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2020, my work expanded to explore the economic and environmental impacts of Proof-of-Work cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. A strand of this research involves developing a computational methodology to estimate the CO2 emissions from Bitcoin mining, aiming to enhance transparency and promote more efficient consensus mechanisms.

My contributions span multiple fields, including environmental economics, international trade, public finance, development economics, and finance, using theoretical, empirical, and computational approaches. My research has been cited in leading journals and working paper series, including Econometrica, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Journal of International Economics, Journal of Public Economic Theory, NBER, Social Choice and Welfare, and others.
